Winter is coming…

The first few flurries have started to arrive. The question is, will the snow conditions hold up over the winter season?

While the world has been gripped with climate change and Covid-19, the alps have been gripped with a flurry of tourists and temperatures soaring. However, luckily for us a warm summer can lead to a cold winter. We are starting to see snow fall even in the next few weeks, potentially the next few days.

           El Niño or La Niña?

Over the summer months meteorologists were looking for the signs of either El Nino or La Nina developing, or ENSO neutral conditions. So what does this mean exactly?… El Nino is typically characterised with warmer temperatures in the Pacific ocean, whereas la Nina generally indicates cooler temperatures. More importantly, a strong La Nina can predict better snow conditions across the Rockies in the US and western Canada.

           Other Factors

Whilst La Nina is great for snow conditions, it doesn’t necessarily show any correlation with snow in the Alps. However the high pressure-system created by la Nina in the North pacific is also causing high pressure over the polar region. This is definitely favourable for winter conditions, and we can hope for cold air transport over europe.

So overall, the clouds are darkening, the snowline is creeping down to the valley and we are starting to prepare our skis for what we hope will be a snowy winter.

           What is the Ikon Pass?

Although predominantly designed for the United States market, anyone can buy it worldwide. It gives access to a vast number of ski and mountain resorts worldwide. This could be your ticket to ride the world.

The Ikon Pass is an annual multi-destination ski pass that gives access to over sixty resorts worldwide. The pass is predominantly created for snow sports in the USA, with eighteen resorts providing unlimited access when you buy the full access pass.

There are some cheaper options that are relevant to more local skiing, but we are looking at the global picture.

Whether you live in the United States, Europe, Australia, Scandinavia, or anywhere else, and you are as obsessed with snow sports and mountains as we are, this ticket could be the ultimate answer to travelling the world on skis or boards.

We envision professionals who can travel while working from their laptops in a true digital nomad style, visiting Ikon Pass destinations around the world. Or how about early retirees, young adults who are taking a year off work or education, or individuals who simply don’t want to adhere to a nine-to-five schedule and can afford to travel frequently. The fun doesn’t stop just because you’re an adult, and the possibilities are endless.

So, when you get to an Ikon Pass destination, what are the access options? It depends on the pass that you buy.

Why Chamonix is a Paragliding Paradise

Paragliding in the Chamonix mountain range is a serene yet thrilling experience, beginning with a smooth take-off from scenic alpine slopes such as Planpraz, Plan de l’Aiguille, or Col de Balme, where the pilot effortlessly guides the glider into the air.

Once airborne, passengers enjoy panoramic views of the Mont Blanc range and the Chamonix valley before descending gently to land in vast grassy fields such as the Bois du Bouchet. Both take-off and landing are calm, controlled, and led by an expert pilot, making mountain paragliding in Chamonix a safe, unforgettable way to experience the Alps from above.

Chamonix is legendary in the free-flight community. Nestled around the Mont‑Blanc massif, it offers strong thermals, reliable valley winds, and launch sites at various altitudes, from Brevent at 2,000 m to Aiguille du Midi at 3,800 m.

Local flight experts say the valley’s natural lift makes “Chamonix valley one of the best flying areas in the world”.

Every takeoff spot—from mid‑valley slopes to glaciers—offers a unique aerial playground.

           Tandem Paragliding Chamonix

For someone who comes to Chamonix on holiday, a Tandem flight are the ideal entry point: no experience needed, fully guided by a qualified instructor, letting you feel what real flight is like.

           What is Tandem Paragliding?

Tandem paragliding is a way to fly with a qualified pilot in a special two-person paraglider. The passenger is safely harnessed in front of the pilot, who manages everything, including flying and landing.

You, as the passenger, can relax and enjoy the view, and if you want, can sometimes take control for a short time during the flight.

What is Tandem Paragliding Like in Chamonix?

You would take off from a mountain (usually Planpraz or Plan de l’Aiguille) with breathtaking views of Mont Blanc, Aiguille du Midi, and the Chamonix valley.

Flights typically last 15 to 30 minutes, depending on conditions.

You’ll glide silently above forests, glaciers, and alpine meadows — an unforgettable way to see the Alps.

The landing is smooth, usually in the Bois du Bouchet landing field near Chamonix town.
Your Paragliding Pilot in Chamonix
Tandem pilots are fully certified by the French Free Flight Federation (FFVL). They handle everything: weather checks, safety briefings, and flight control. Before take-off, they’ll give you a short run-through as you usually take a few steps or a brief run down a slope to lift off gently.

Before diving into paragliding courses, we recommend trying a tandem paragliding flight with one of the companies we mentioned above.

Once you’re ready, choose a course that fits your pace, pack the necessary gear, connect with new friends, and follow the thermals upwards.

When you are flying comfortably in calm or easy thermal conditions, it’s time to improve your skills with progression and cross-country courses.

Air Sports offers 5-day progression programs for €749, or €189 per day. These programs help you refine your inflation techniques, piloting skills, and solo flights. You will also learn how to use instruments and land more precisely.

Chamonix Parapente offers cross-country training for €110-€130 per day. Their Level 1 to Level 3 courses run from April to July. This training focuses on reading the weather, using thermals, planning flights, and developing tactics.

These courses are important for pilots who want to gain control and challenge themselves beyond the valley. You will learn how to use thermals, understand wind patterns, and navigate longer flights.

           Paragliding Community in Chamonix

The paragliding community in Chamonix is friendly and welcoming. With stunning views of Mont Blanc and great flying spots like Planpraz, Plan de l’Aiguille, and Les Grands Montets, it attracts pilots from around the world, from beginners to experienced flyers. The community is special because everyone shares a love for flying. Pilots meet early in the morning to check the weather, discuss flight plans, and go up the lifts together. After flying, you can often find them relaxing in cafés in Chamonix Sud or at landing fields, sharing stories and tips.

To connect with local pilots, head to the landing zone at Bois du Bouchet. It’s a social hub where paragliders pack up, talk about flying conditions, and plan the next day’s flights. Don’t be shy to start a conversation — everyone is friendly, speaks different languages, and is eager to help visitors. Asking about launch sites, thermal conditions, or where to rent equipment can lead to great discussions.

You can also meet people through local paragliding schools and clubs, such as Kailash Parapente, Wing Over Chamonix, Air Sports Chamonix, or Chamonix Paragliding School.

Groups often organise flights, workshops, or debriefs, which are great opportunities to socialise. If you’re staying longer, consider joining the Club de Vol Libre de Chamonix (CVLC) to connect with more pilots and access club briefings.

Online, the community stays active on Facebook groups, WhatsApp chats, and local forums. Pilots share weather updates, organise rides, or post flight photos. Searching for “Parapente Chamonix” or “Chamonix Paragliding” will help you find several active groups.

Whether you need flying advice or just want to meet others who love the skies, the Chamonix paragliding community is open and ready to welcome new flyers.

           Paragliding Safety & Final Advice

Paragliding involves certain risks, but proper training can greatly reduce them. In France, the fatality rate for paragliding is approximately 0.02% over a 21-day period.

It’s crucial to use appropriate equipment, including a helmet and a reserve parachute, and to have a coach while maintaining a risk-aware attitude.

Don’t hesitate to progress in your skills: practice inflation and landings in calm weather before attempting higher altitudes.
