Leaving from the centre of Chamonix, The Aiguille du Midi cable car goes up to 3800m in two stages. The top terrace at 3842m provides spectacular views of the Swiss, French and Italian Alps. On a clear day it is possible to see the Matterhorn, Monta Rosa and the Grand Combin. You can watch climbers battle with snow, ice and rock while having a picnic or eating at one of the restaurants.

For a special trip in Chamonix the Montenvers famous rack and pinion railway takes you up to the Mer de Glace glacier, the Drus and the Grand Jorasses. From here you descend a steep path or by cablecar to the top of 100 steps that lead you to the heart of the glacier - the ice cave. The cave is carved every year and inside the ice sculptures illustrate scenes from alpine life in the early 19th century.

Your family can also view the animal museum and an exhibition of beautiful mountain crystals found in the region. From here hikes such as Montenvers - Plan de l'Aiguille crossing via the Grand balcon Nord, down to Chamonix - Les Planards or the village of Les Bois are popular.

A wonderful way to discover the local produce and traditional foods is to visit the Saturday Market in the centre of Chamonix. You can taste the local cheese, find fresh local fruit and vegetables and sample saussicons – a strong cured salami with its own distinctive smell and flavor!
